Although some drugs help protect the ovaries against chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the reality, he said, is that there is still no conclusive research on the benefits that these drugs may have.
However, according to the expert, freezing or cryopreservation of eggs is a good option for women who, having been diagnosed with breast cancer, dream of becoming mothers.
"This technique involves getting mature eggs after the patient has been subjected for two weeks to medical treatment and monitoring for subsequent freezing," he said. This process, he explained, must be done before the patient starts chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
He explained that the success of these procedures depends on several factors such as the age of the patient, the type of cancer and the time elapsed after chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
"It is recommended that treatment be done five years after chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and you can achieve up to 65% success if all of these factors are combined," he said.
