According to the authorities, 140 people worked overnight at the factory when alarms and sensors were activated. Ammonia is used to freeze or cool food in the plant.

A representative of a hazardous materials team said 15 people had been transferred to five hospitals in the area. The company Pinnacle Foods based in New Jersey and parent of Birds Eye, said Sunday evening that most hospitalized, although three were still under observation .

Seventy-five workers were checked and released. Authorities suspect the leak was due to "mechanical failure," according to The Janesville Gazette.

The authorities have ruled out any danger to the community.
