Yucatán.- Specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Yucatan have successfully transplanted a kidney transplant to a beneficiary of the entity, diagnosed with the virus of 39; human immunodeficiency (HIV) and who suffered chronic renal failure .

The IMSS donation and transplantation coordination indicated that it is the third kidney transplant which is made to the beneficiaries of the Institute with HIV; Six years ago, this procedure was performed on a patient at the No. 25 Special Hospital in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, and four months ago at the Siglo XXI National Medical Center's specialized hospital.

Dr. Jorge Martínez Ulloa, Head of Unit of Transplantation Medical Unit High Specialization (UMAE ) "Lic Ignacio García Téllez" of Mérida, pointed out that thanks to the retroviral drugs that the Social Security acquires, it is possible to control the rejection of the organ and not to increase the Immunosuppression The patient with HIV who predisposes to infection.
For surgery, there were two multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses and technicians, who simultaneously performed kidney extraction and implant surgery, which was given by their sister.
Before the transplant, the beneficiary was in good health, he was verified that he maintained a strict adherence to his treatment, with the support of the infectious disease specialist doctor.
The only variant of this transplant was in the surgical protocol, explains Dr. Martínez Ulloa, because the measures were strengthened in the operating room to ensure better patient safety and staff, for example, thicker gloves and lenses to prevent any type of contamination.
Dr. Mario Burgos Soto, AMUS nephrologist of the IMSS in Yucatan, reported that the transplanted legitimate recipient was progressing satisfactorily, presented no complications and continued to take medication to avoid rejection of the organ and control the virus
The two specialists of the IMSS have highlighted the good recovery of the patient because after a few weeks of transplantation, the anemia decreased, it improved the skin color and the amount of fluid that the body has; they said that they were proud and grateful to the Institute for helping them implement this new procedure, which aims to help restore the quality and life expectancy of HIV-positive patients.
The recipient of the transplant thanked the doctors who offered him the option of transplantation and his family, especially his sister, for giving him a second chance at life
