Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., October 21, 2018. As part of the World Day Against Osteoporosis, the Oaxaca Health Services (OSS) inform the population of Oaxaca – mainly women – factors that increase the risk of presenting this pathology.
The general recommendations against osteoporosis provide that, in adolescence, adequate amounts of calcium are consumed and that a constant exercise is practiced to improve the quality of life.
Calcium and vitamin D deficiency, malnutrition, smoking, alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle are among the leading causes of osteoporosis.
According to the director of prevention and promotion of SSO María del Pilar Nava Ramírez, in Oaxaca, 4.36% of women over 50 suffer, that is 13 000 387 women.
This disease appears when the density of bone mass decreases and the bones become more fragile. It is estimated that one in three women and one in 12 men are likely to suffer from this disease.
Women represent the largest number of cases and although this may appear at an early age, the risk increases at the menopausal stage; due to the decrease in estrogen production by the ovaries and other hormonal deficiencies.
Nava Ramírez said fractures of the lumbar vertebra and femur are the main consequence of this disease, as the skeleton becomes porous, which increases the number and size of the cavities.
Occupational health and safety officials have prioritized prevention efforts to reduce the damage that threatens the well-being of Oaxaca.
