In 2010, the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District awarded him the Gold Medal for Artistic Merit and also the UNAM distinguished him with the Honorary Doctorate Causa for being representative of Latin poetry of the last half century.

He received the "Miguel de Cervantes" Award 2009 to challenge the literary heritage in Spanish language, also in 2001, the College of Mexico awarded him the "Alfonso Reyes" Award, created by this institution.

He has taught at several universities in different countries like the United States, Canada and England, and he worked as a researcher in the Department of Historical Studies of the National Institute of Anthropology and history (INAH).

Among his many works, are the books The Principle of Pleasure (1972) and the Battles in the Desert (1981), one of his most read stories, which revolves around the nostalgia of an impossible love.
