Although in the world of crypto-currencies the term "ASIC" is associated with the technology applied to mining, the material offered by the Ethereum 2.0 hardware does not work in the same kind of intensive computer processes.

On the contrary, these ASIC devices will be busy performing a much less expensive operation called verifiable delay function. This helps the validators supposed to replace the minors in the Ethereum participation test system. The idea is that the hardware will prevent any person or organization from trying to muster enough power to take control of system operations.

The cost of the project is estimated at 20 to 30 million USD, according to Justin Drake. This includes between 15 and 25 million US dollars for research and development, as well as nearly 5 million US dollars for the construction of about 5,000 machines.

The Ethereum and Filecoin Foundation, which raised more than $ 250 million through an ICO last year, will share the costs of this project at € 50.50. Justin Drake said the design of this ASIC hardware will be open source, which has never been done before.
