Indonesia.-A total of 292 crocodiles large adults to two-meter-tall babies at a crocodile farm in Sorong, West Papua, were killed by local residents on Saturday in an act of retaliation after a crocodile bit a resident named Sugito, who was bleeding to death.
His family said that Sugito, who worked in a tofu plant, was looking for grass for his livestock when a local resident heard him cry for help, but Sugito said was found dead, said Olga, a local resident.
After Sugito's funeral Saturday, local residents went to the crocodile farm for to kill to reptiles . "The locals used knives to kill crocodiles" says Olga.
"Crocodiles were captured and dragged out and stabbed to death, it was so horrible to see" . The farm belongs to a Sorong resident, Albert Siahaan.
The head of the West Papuan Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Basar Manullang, disapproved of the incident. "The killing of crocodiles violated the law on the destruction of the property of others," he said.
The crocodile farm was legally treated because it had an official permit issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, he added.
The permit is legal and the process to obtain it in Jakarta has taken a long time. There were steps and conditions to fulfill, and it was under the authority of the local government. The killing of crocodiles is obviously against the law, he said.
