It is a multifactorial condition that is caused by both environmental stimuli and the genetics of individuals. Some risk factors are extremely obvious, such as obesity, poor diet, smoking or physical inactivity. Of the others, not so much. Genetics clearly plays a role, although the details of their mechanisms have been slow to discover more than expected.

The reality of the pandemic is clear: 425 million people suffer from diabetes worldwide. A serious health problem in Mexico, which records 12 million diabetics, according to data from the International Diabetes Federation.

Faced with this situation, genomic medicine seems to be one of its most promising promises: to personalize treatments in order to obtain impact and pharmacological effectiveness, known as personalized medicine.

Recently, a study titled "Genes of Type 2 Diabetes Analyzed by Multiple-trait Association Highlights Mechanisms and Subtypes of Disease: A Soft Classification Analysis", published by Harvard researchers, established a new mathematical statistical model that provides a detailed classification of the disease for the first time.

With the new tool, the identification of five subgroups of diabetics inserted into the two previously known groups, namely insulin-dependent and insulin resistance, was performed. In addition, the knowledge acquired details the organs in which the genes identifying each subgroup are activated. A milestone for this discipline, according to experts.
