Eight Mexican wolf puppies were born in captivity at the Los Coyotes Zoo in April, as part of the conservation efforts of the species.

During a visit to the zoo, it was possible to observe the eight cubs just one year old, as well as their parents and their seven brothers.

The 17 wolves are constantly monitored by a group of veterinarians who feed them. they take care

Claudia Levy, director of zoos and wildlife in Mexico City, stressed that this is proof of the success of the program.

The space where they live and thrive in the wild, almost four thousand square meters, looks like the natural habitat of this species, which is located in the states of Chihuahua and Sonora and where the conservation program is applied, explains Levy.

The zoo director said the conservation of the endangered Mexican wolf is a joint effort with the United States.

Next week, the group of experts involved in the program will meet to exchange information on the development of wolf breeding and determine when they will be released .

The project between the two nations involves a total of 350 wolves in conservation, of which 150 are in Mexico .

In the country's capital, 17 of these specimens are found in the Los Coyotes Zoo, four in the Aragón Zoo and one in Chapultepec.

The father of the litter is Yoltic, which means in Nahuatl "the one who lives" and the mother was named Pearl. In April 2017, they had seven wolves and in April of this year eight more.

Levy pointed out that these wild animals are stigmatized as aggressive and dangerous to people, because their stories date back to ancient legends. However, the biggest threat to the Mexican wolf, he said, is the man who conducted extermination campaigns in response to breeders' complaints that they had losses.

The director explains that they do not allow reproduction of wolves within the same family for genetic reasons and provides that the scope of Yoltic and Pearl is the last one, given that A male will be wanted for one of the eight females who are in the Zoo located south of Mexico City.
