President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Friday the launch of the program You are at home which will provide health, education and employment services to migrants from Central America.
In a video posted on the Ministry of the Interior's Twitter account, the president explained that the project included the possibility that migrants could send their children to schools in Mexico.
"We know very well that you are looking for an opportunity, whether you want to build a new home and a future for your family." Today, Mexico is reaching out to you, "he said.
Peña Nieto added that being at home would allow migrants to obtain a temporary identification allowing them to do all the paperwork needed during the regularization of their situation in Mexico.
In addition, the program provides that beneficiaries have access to Temporary employment program if they fulfill two conditions: that the applicant is in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca and that their parents or companions have requested their entry or refuge in the country before the National Institute of Migration (MNI).
The president specified that members of the caravan of migrants can request their inclusion in this program.
Peña Nieto pointed out that this project was the first step towards a permanent and legal solution for people who obtain refugee status in the country.
"Mexico wants to protect you and support you, the only way to do this is to regularize your stay in the country and to respect our laws," he said.
