Specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Yucatan performed a kidney transplant in a beneficiary of the entity, diagnosed with the virus of the 39, Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) and Chronic Kidney Failure.
Coordination of donations and transplants of the IMSS reported that it is the third intervention of this type that is carried out among the beneficiaries of the Institute with HIV in the national context. Six years ago, this procedure was performed on a patient at the No. 25 Special Hospital in Monterrey, Nuevo León; four months ago at the hospital specialties of Siglo XXI national medical center, and the latter in the high-end medical unit (UMAE) "Lic Ignacio García Téllez."
Dr. Jorge Martínez Ulloa, head of UMAE's transplant unit "Lic. Ignacio García Téllez", said that thanks to the retroviral drugs that social security acquires, it is possible to control the rejection of the disease. organ and not increase the state of immunosuppression that the patient with HIV and who predisposes to infection.
Specialized with two multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses and technicians, who simultaneously performed the extraction surgery and implantation of the kidney, which was given by his sister.
Prior to transplantation, the recipient was in good health conditions, it was verified that he maintained a strict adherence to his treatment, with the support of the infectious disease doctor.
The only variation of this transplant was in the surgical protocol, explains Dr. Martínez Ulloa, due to the fact that measures in the operating room to ensure greater safety for the patient and staff; for example, gloves and thicker lenses have been used to prevent contamination.
Mario Burgos Soto, UEMA nephrologist of the IMSS in Yucatan, said that the transplanted legitimate recipient was progressing satisfactorily, did not present complications and continued with their drugs to prevent the rejection of the organ and control the virus.
The two IMSS specialists pointed out the good recovery of the patient because after a few weeks of grafting the anemia decreased, the skin color and the amount of fluid that has the body; They said they were proud and grateful to the Institute for helping them implement this new procedure, which aims to restore the quality and life expectancy of HIV-positive patients.
The recipient of the transplant thanked the doctors who offered him transplant and his relatives, especially his sister, for giving him a second chance at life.
