The director Alfonso Cuarón has always known that if he accepted his alliance with Netflix, Rome would not reach the circuit of Mexican trade shows.

For this reason, the premiere of his acclaimed film (which will surely be nominated for several awards, including the Oscar) will only be made in "selected cinemas" and not in major chains such as Cinepolis and Cinemex.

Netflix announced that Rome will be presented from November 21 at the Cineteca Nacional, Cinemanía and Cine Tonalá in Mexico City. The director and Netflix have endowed Cinemanía and Tonalá with expensive equipment: a Christie 4K projector and a Dolby Atmos system so that the film can be seen and felt in the manner of Alfonso Cuarón.

In fact, during its one-week broadcast on CDMX last September, the film brought in around 116,000 pesos and sold 1,900 tickets. The first almost secretive was to be considered by the Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences.

For a while, during the premiere at the Morelia International Film Festival, an arrangement was planned with Cinepolis to exhibit it, but that was not the case.

Alfonso Cuarón convinced Netflix to take him to Morelia because the filmmaker has a special affection for the festival. In fact, he confessed that this is where the idea of ​​the film came to him.

A representative of Cinepolis refused to make a statement on why Rome would not be presented in its rooms.

Netflix said that "Cuarón has used the latest technologies in image and sound to capture the 1971 DF in rebuilding an era never seen in Latin American cinema that deserves to be seen. to be appreciated on the big screen, "they said.

However, Netflix has placed it in small independent theaters and will not do it in large film complexes with the technological features to display and carry it all over Mexico.

Rome has not only broken the rules of the trade show market, but also those of Netflix.

With this money, producers must promote Rome so that members of the US Academy can choose from the nominated films.

And 2 million additional pesos for its distribution on the Mexican territory, after its selection in the official selection of the International Film Festival of Venice; and an additional 1 million pesos rewarded as best film.

In addition, Cuarón received 10 million euros for the Joint Tourism Promotion Fund of Mexico City.

More cinemas for Rome

The company announced that Alfonso Cuarón's film would also be screened in Guadalajara, in the Guillermo del Toro hall of the Cineforum of the University of Guadalajara, and in Monterrey, at the Cineteca Nuevo León.

"The film will continue to be screened in these cities by adding, as of November 29, the following: Aguascalientes: Alternative Room Aguascalientes, Toluca: Cineteca Mexiquense, Tijuana: Tonalá Cine, Cuernavaca: Cine Morelos and Oaxaca at Teatro Juárez" , they reported.

Netflix will donate the proceeds of its box office revenue from the third week of the show to civil society organizations for launch on Netflix on December 14th.
