48 megapixels. This is the brand that the new Sony IMX586 established in the field of mobile photography.
The new sensor can capture up to 8,000 x 6,000 pixels of resolution, which, according to the manufacturer, no other company has been successful so far. Only Huawei – with the P20 Pro – and Nokia – with the Lumia 1020 – manages to get close to these numbers.
Sony claims that this new sensor offers a dynamic range up to four times that of previous models.

To overcome this deficiency, the Japanese manufacturer uses technology pixel binning that combines adjacent pixels (in groups of four with a 2×2 matrix). The results, if they are enabled in this mode, would be equivalent to those of a sensor with pixels of 1.6 microns and a resolution of 12 megapixels.
The technology pixel binning and is used in phones like the Huawei P20 Pro whose main sensor has a resolution of 40 megapixels. However, its integration into Sony sensors – the most used in the industry – could extend this technology to the products of many other manufacturers.

Beyond Resolutions and sizes, the new IMX586 is capable of recording videos in the following combinations:

Manufacturers wishing to use this sensor will have to wait until September of this year so it will be difficult to find equipment with an IMX586 sensor before 2019.
