The surprise discovery of human skeletal remains in a room adjoining Apostolic Nunciature in Rome, the Vatican Embassy before the Italian government, relaunched speculation about the never-clarified disappearance of the young Emanuela Orlandi in 1983.

Although these vestiges are not officially linked to those of Orlandi, the Italian press already makes assumptions about the fate of the girl, of Vatican nationality, who disappeared without a trace on June 22, 1983.
At the moment, the Italian judicial authority has organized technical reviews, especially the extraction of DNA, to check whether it was Emanuela or of Mirella Gregori, another girl who disappeared in Rome the same year.
Orlandi was the daughter of an official of the prefecture of the Pontifical House. She was 15 years old when she disappeared after taking a music lesson in the Apollinare building, located just steps from Piazza Navona.
The fate of this girl kept all of Italy in suspense in the weeks that followed her demise and even Pope John Paul II made several public calls to his life. But she never went home.
In 35 years, investigations, assumptions and disappointments have multiplied for the family, which still requires clarification. Despite the passage of time, the Italians followed with passion every new sign.
