With the M 133 engine of 2013, Mercedes-AMG It offered the world's most powerful four-cylinder, with 360 hp in the Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG, which in 2015 would rise to 381 hp. Now the brand Affalterbach presents a new 2.0 liter turbo, which becomes again the most powerful tetracilíndrico of the market.
This block M 139, that although the mark has not confirmed that it would give life to new variants 45 of the Mercedes-AMG compact family, will be available in two versions: on the one hand the base, 387 HP, and on the other hand the variants S, of a maximum power of 421 hp, nothing less.
With a displacement of 1,991 cubic centimetersthis recently developed M 139 block is hand-assembled in Affalterbach following the same "One man, one engine" philosophy of the AMG V8 and V12 engines. He announces a specific power of 211 HP per liter, is able to climb 7,200 rpm and it has a compression ratio of 9.0: 1.
To be a turbo engine, it is curious that the top offers maximum torque, 480 Nm in the basic version and 500 Nm in the most powerful, because it is not available precisely at low corners. In the first, it reaches between 4,750 and 5,000 rpm, while in the 421 hp, the maximum torque develops between 5,000 and 5,250 rounds. Probably offering a good percentage of torque to a lot less turns, but the brand does not detail it, besides citing its typical atmospheric character.
The new M 139, with a magnifying glass
Like the M 260 (out of 35 models) and the previous M 133, the M 139 is mounted in position transversebut unlike them, it has rotated 180 degrees on its vertical axis, which means that the turbo and the exhaust manifold are now at the rear (the closest to the cockpit), and the 'entry to the front, which according to AMG, it allows a flatter and aerodynamic design of the front and shortens the air ducts.
The twinscroll turbocharger, which promises an immediate response at low speeds, uses roller bearings for the turbine shaft and compressor – a solution adopted by the V8 AMG GT 4-door biturbo 4.0 liters, which, according to the brand, minimizes mechanical friction inside the turbocharger and therefore improves the response because the turbine reaches its maximum speed more quickly 169,000 rpm.
The brand announces a maximum blowing pressure of the turbo 2.1 bar for the most powerful version and 1.9 bar for the variant of 387 HP. In addition to oil and water, the turbocharger is also cooled by air, which is redirected from the grille and through the engine hood, designed as an air deflector, as well as by sleeves under the hood.
This solution of additional cooling by air is inherited from AMG's development of the aforementioned 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which, as we already knew, incorporates the turbos installed inside the vee engine ("hot V"). Of course, this 2.0 liter includes ECO Start / Stop function, spark plug function and particulate filter, and announces a weight (with liquids) of 160.5 kilograms.
The block is manufactured in in aluminium, crankshaft is forged steel, forged aluminum pistons and cylinders incorporate technology Nanoslide from the house, a friction-reducing cylinder liner coating introduced for the first time in the M 156 (6.2-liter V8), although it is even used today in Formula 1.
It also incorporates a dual overhead cam with variable Camtronic valve lift and what the brand calls two-step injection (direct and indirect), because it has piezoelectric injectors (200 bar) in the combustion chambers, but the fuel is also injected into the intake manifold by solenoid valves.
