A man accused of attacking his wife with an electric saw in front of his children in his home in the Los Angeles area was previously deported from the United States 11 times, authorities said Saturday. Lori Haley, of the US Customs and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said that Alejandro Álvarez Villegas, 32, is a "serial immigration offender."

Álvarez Villegas was arrested Thursday aboard a stolen vehicle in Chula Vista, a few kilometers from the border with Mexico.

According to police, Alvarez Villegas is suspected of having attacked his wife inside her house in Whittier, leaving her covered with blood. It is planned to recover.

It is not immediately clear whether Álvarez Villegas has a lawyer to comment on the charges.

Haley said the federal immigration authorities have filed arrest warrants against Álvarez Villegas, asking local authorities to inform them before his release.

Álvarez Villegas has been a frequent visitor to the United States since 2005.
