Manama, July 1 (EFE) .- The Serrania de Chiribiquete National Nature Park, Colombia, was inscribed today on the UNESCO World Heritage List at a UNESCO World Heritage Site. session held in Manama, capital of Bahrain.
The Serrania de Chiribiquete National Natural Park is located in the Amazon region of southern Colombia, it is the largest national park of the country with 2.7 million hectares and one of the the most important wilderness areas in the world.
It is the first mixed site in Colombia, which already has eight other sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, six cultural sites and two natural sites.
In her speech at the 42nd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Julia Miranda Londoño, Director of Colombia's National Natural Parks, emphasized the uniqueness of this mixed site and the "challenges it entails" to its conservation and administration.
He also highlighted the role of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who has granted "special protection to this site at this crucial moment for peace and sustainable development" in Colombia.
For his part, the director of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, Ernesto Montenegro, said at the meeting that Chiribiquete Park "expresses from the heart of the Amazon the strength and the sanctity of nature, as well as the diversity and ascendancy of knowledge ".
They are "Carijonas, Huitotos, Desanas, Nukak and many other peoples who allow that with their knowledge, the spirit of the jaguar, the anaconda and the tapir continue to be a condition of life, "added Montenegro.
According to UNESCO, one of the "most impressive" features of Chiribiquete is the existence of many tepuyes (steep flat-topped plateaus), where more than 75,000 rock images were counted in the walls of about sixty shelters created in these rock formations. performances interpreted as hunting scenes, battles, dances and ceremonies related to an alleged cult of the jaguar, symbol of power and fertility.
It is also home to many emblematic species, including the jaguar, the cougar, the Brazilian tapir, the giant otter and the howler monkey.
The park's biodiversity values are "intimately linked" to culture and archeology, which are "closely associated with the beliefs and spiritual values of the indigenous peoples who live there."
