The National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) has recovered 17 works of art worth an estimated one to three billion pesos, guaranteed by the PGR as part of the Elba Esther Gordillo Diversion Investigation
Among the pieces that were recovered on June 28 are five panels by Diego Rivera painted at the New Workers School in New York in 1993; works by Gabriel Orozco, Francisco Toledo, Antoni Clavé and Pedro Coronel, and others who have been cataloged as unknown author.
According to Alfonso Cepeda Salas, Secretary General of SNTE, after taking legal action to recover various works of art, the day before the Attorney General's Office (PGR) officially handed over the cultural heritage that will be exposed to the public and teachers in the next school year.
The secretary said that the work was obtained in the period before the teacher presides Juan Diaz de la Torre, but avoided referring to the judicial process by which the work remained saved by the PGR.
"The most important thing for us is to recover a legacy of incalculable artistic and cultural value," he said. also that if trade union rights are officially granted, the work will be entrusted to a committee of experts led by the commissioner of the collection, Paul Achar Zavalza, "so that they do not receive the minimum of damage" and that the maintenance and preservation of the same will be paid with union dues.
At the end of the ceremony, Marco Antonio del Toro, Gordillo's attorney, stated that the works were not recovered but received late since they were made available to the SNTE since 2014.
