At least seven people were burned alive while they were trying to escape, by car or on foot, from the worst forest fire for a decade in Greece.
A Reuters witness saw at least four dead on a road in the community of Mati about 29 kilometers east of Athens. The popular tourist destination was devastated by the fire that began around 14:00 GMT.
The Department of Health confirmed the death of three other people, while the federal authorities said that the death toll will surely increase. At least 56 people were injured and several are missing
Other journalists said they saw at least seven dead on a road to Mati. A TV channel reported that eight bodies were being transported by boat to the port of Rafina, near Mati.
As night fell, it became impossible to calculate the extent of the disaster.
The authorities deployed firefighters and equipment from all over Greece to cope with the Kineta disaster a small but popular seaside resort about 54 kilometers to the west of Athens, on a road that tens of thousands of drivers use daily to reach the Peloponnese.
The Athens-Corinth main road, one of two routes to the Peloponnese Peninsula, was closed and train services were discontinued.

Fueled by strong winds that quickly changed direction, the fire burned vast areas of pine forests and television images showed burning gardens. The fire would have started in a gorge in the mountains surrounding Kineta, a popular seaside resort among the Athenians.
