In a recent survey conducted by a team of researchers from National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), In collaboration with the Institute of Geophysics of UNAM, the existence of a Camera 15 meters in diameter located under Pyramid of the moon, as well as a tunnel which ends towards the south of the Plaza de la Luna in the archaeological zone of Teotihuacán.
The cavity, located eight meters deep, could be a ritual space, informed the doctor Veronica Ortega, Director of the Integral Conservation Project at Plaza de la Luna.
In the explorations conducted in the late eighties of the last century, through tunnels dug into the body of the pyramid, archaeologists Rubén Cabrera and Saburo Sugiyama found skeletons of individuals with cranial deformity, as in the Mayan region, as well as various objects. in green stone (necklaces, anthropomorphic figures in mosaics), so it is not difficult to think that something similar could be found in the basement, "he said.
He stressed that the research, rather than focusing on the search for a burial chamber, revolved around the ritual space related to the underworld that gave a sacredness to the old city.
The Deputy Technical Director of the Archaeological Zone of Teotihuacán He explained that an exploration of the camera would also reveal whether each of the main buildings had specific contact with a certain region of Mesoamerica, for example, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, where marine materials were found which show their relationship with Caribbean and the Gulf Coast.
The discovery of the camera and the tunnel is the result of a study of electrical resistivity carried out around the Pyramid of the Moon in June 2017 by INAH experts and a team of specialists from the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. (UNAM), but so far the results of the study are made public.
During the first days of October, the same team conducted new surveys to locate the conduit entrance at a depth of eight meters.
The tunnel is located south of Plaza de la Luna, but it is likely that there is another entrance on the east side. It is therefore essential to have a complete X-ray to know what their access is, "they said.
It should be noted that the pyramid of the moon is the only building of the archaeological site that faces the Calzada de los Muertos directly.
In addition, it is a structure that has been constantly worked by the Teotihuacans themselves, who have enlarged it seven times and is linked to the rituals that take place in the Plaza de la Luna.
