An archaeological mission of Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt announced the discovery of an ancient tomb that dates back to the Ptolemaic period . Inside, they found a huge sarcophagus more than 2,000 years old.
During the excavations of routine inspection of Al-Karmi Street li, in the district of Sidi Gaber, in ] Alexandria the coffin was found at 5 meters deep. He was accompanied by a giant alabaster head .
Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explained that "the tomb dates from the Ptolemaic period" referring to the Ptolemies, the dynasty of the Greek royal family that ruled for nearly three centuries of 305 to 30 AD
The discovery surprised scientists by its size : 2.35 meters long and 1.65 meters wide. They say that it is the largest object of its kind found in the city of Alexandria . "We observe that there is a layer of mortar between the lid and the body of the sarcophagus indicating that it has not been opened since it closed," they said.
Scientists have not yet opened the sarcophagus, but assume that there is some one of very high rank in the interior. They believe that the alabaster head could be a representation of the buried character. For the moment, the discovery is being analyzed.
