LOS ANGELES.- Something of heroin sold to Los Angeles could be contaminated by the bacterium that causes botulism, which puts danger to those who inject drugs, authorities said Tuesday.
The County Public Health Department said that it was investigating three possible cases of botulism due to the use of heroin.
Symptoms of the disease can be confused with drug overdose and include heavy eyelids, blurred vision, and breathing problems.
Authorities warn that contaminated drugs appear to be the same as drugs that do not contain the bacteria. And that heating the drug does not kill the bacteria .
Botulism, a potentially fatal disease, can spread among those who share needles.
