Tobacco is associated with 30% of different types of cancer

MEXICO (Notimex) .- With the motto "Make your voice heard", November 5th to 7th, the first National Patient Congress "Together against cancer", in which smoking will be a central issue as a factor affecting the development of this disease.

The participation of about 300 patients from all over the country is expected, as well as 55 civil organizations.

Specialists will present, first and foremost, advances and challenges in cancer treatment, information workshops on various pathologies and psychosocial care, as well as patient testimonials.

As part of the activities of this Congress, the second will be held Meeting of Civil Organizations "Together Against Cancer"organized by the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara (HCG), the Voluntary Cancer Foundation and the national movement Together Against Cancer.

This movement brings together more than 58 civil society organizations from 28 states of the Republic who are joining forces to make an impact on cancer control and prevention.

Types of cancer

Announcing the details of the meeting that will be organized by the Hotel Fiesta Americana Guadalajara, Executive Director of the HCG, Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, said that smoking is related to cancer of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, larynx, bronchi and trachea, as well as malignant tumors of the digestive system, such as the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon and bladder

He added that a cigar contains about 70 substances that can cause a carcinogenic effect, such as nicotine and tar.

"That's why it's important to insist that people stop smoking."he explained.

He recalled that smoking was not only harmful for the smoker, but also for those around him, as he was at risk of developing cancer if he was exposed to cigarette smoke.

At the conference, the director of the Mexican Association for the Fight Against Cancer, Mayra Galindo Leal, He commented that 30% of the different types of cancer are caused by smoking.

80 thousand Mexicans die

The experts said that in Mexico, every year 190,000 new cases of this pathology are registered and that 80,000 Mexicans die from it. In addition, seven out of ten patients arrive in the health services at an advanced stage of the disease.

Cancer is part of the Global Plan of Action for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseasespresented by the World Health Organization (WHO), whose goal is to reduce by 2025 25% of premature deaths caused by cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.
