Trump bombards Macron through several tweets

Washington. President Trump directed his anger by verbal attacks on Twitter against French President Emmanuel Macron, criticizing his popularity rating, his country's employment rate, his trade policy in the wine sector and his vision of military defense.

Trump's recent mistrust of Macron began on Friday when, in a radio interview, the French president declared that a "real European army" is needed for the continent to defend itself without rely on the United States.

Tensions between the two leaders continued Sunday in Paris during the centenary of the Great War's armistice, Macron delivering a critical speech on Trump's nationalism.

In the first of his tweets, Trump distorted what Macron had said during the radio interview and reminded him of the role played by the US military in helping France during the two world wars.

"Emmanuel Macron suggests building his own army to protect Europe against the United States, China and Russia," Trump wrote. "But it was Germany in the First and Second World Wars, how did it work in France?" They started learning German in Paris before the United States appeared.

It is true that in part of the interview given to Europe 1 radio station, Macron said that Europe had to protect itself from "China, Russia and even the United States", but that Macron was referring to questions of cybersecurity and multilateralism of military affairs.

Direct allusion

In his Sunday speech, Macron criticized nationalism as "betrayal of patriotism" and warned against "old demons coming back to cause chaos and death".

The words did not please Trump, who wrote in another tweet: "The problem is that Emmanuel has a very low approval rate in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of nearly 10%. I was just trying to move on to another subject – in fact, there is no country more nationalistic than France, people very proud and with good reason! " In capital letters, he ends: "MAKE A GREAT FRANCE AGAIN".

In another tweet, Trump complained of a trade disparity with France: "In the trade, France makes an excellent wine, but the United States too.The problem is that France makes very difficult for the United States to sell its wines to France and imposes high tariffs, while the EU facilitates sales of French wines and imposes very low tariffs.This is not fair, it must switch! "
