Mexico City. Seven out of 10 people with prediabetes will develop diabetes, but if it is detected early and medical indications are followed, it can be reversed, said Rutila Castañeda, a specialist in endocrinology and nutrition at the "La Raza" National Medical Center.

During his participation in a session on World Diabetes Day, commemorated on 14 November, the researcher discussed the factors taken into account in the diagnosis of prediabetic status.

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood glucose is above normal but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes, that is, blood glucose values between 100 and 125 mg / dl are treated promptly. . it's because the body does not properly process food sugar, "he said.

In 2015, there were 11 million people with glucose intolerance, ie people who, after taking blood, presented pain in the pancreas after two hours .

The researcher explained that when the pancreas no longer gives good quality insulin, the sugar level begins to increase gradually and when the level of 125 mg / dl of fasting glucose is reached, the red lights turn on.

If we continue with the same eating habits and do not exercise, these levels will reach 126 mg / dl, a small difference between prediabetes and diabetes, it's a milligram of deciliter, but with this range, we already diagnose diabetes ", did he declare. .

Risk factors associated with the onset of prediabetes include overweight or obese people, as well as sedentary people. It is therefore important to change the way of life.

Mexico ranks fifth among the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world. An estimated 12 million people with diabetes, but if 80% of them changed their lifestyle, the president of the Mexican Diabetes Federation, Hector Sanchez Mijangos, said that during this time.

If a patient complies with what is referred to as exercise, changes his eating habits and takes his medications, prediabetes could be reversible, although it depends on the condition of your pancreas, says the specialist at Notimex. .

Diabetes "is a disease that is gaining ground because policies have not yielded results, it is necessary to make an effort at the government level to be able to stop this problem," he said.

For his part, Juan Jose Irazabal Lujambio, chairman of the board of the Mexican Diabetes Federation, reminded that one of the organization's goals is to disseminate information about diabetes.

They also seek to promote education about this disease, reduce its incidence and encourage people with this disease to have good control and healthy habits to improve their quality of life.
