A Miami Beach apartment building was evacuated by the city on Monday due to deteriorating concrete, an attorney for the building’s owners said.
The building at 6881 Indian Creek Drive is at least the fourth in Florida to be evacuated or partially evacuated since the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside last month.
Two days after that collapse, on June 24, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava ordered an audit of county buildings five stories or more tall and 40 years of age or older. She encouraged municipalities to do the same, offering county support.
Levine Cava said the audit is expected to be completed within 30 days.
The Indian Creek Drive apartment building has two floors. Miami Beach officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday on what prompted the latest building examination that led to the evacuation.
Manny J. Vadillo, who represents the owners of 6881 Indian Creek Drive, told NBC News that the city of Miami Beach issued a notice to release the property on Monday.
The owners of the building, he said, have been working “diligently” with the city since they decided in May to demolish the building by December. They began to “evacuate the building in an orderly fashion,” according to Vadillo.
Fourteen people, half of whom paid rent, remained in the building, he said. Miami Beach is giving those tenants until the end of the week to vacate, and the owners of the building are helping them move out, he said.
“My clients are extremely security sensitive and in fact have visited the property several times since last week to speak with tenants when communications began with the city to ensure tenants are not taken by surprise “said Vadillo. “Some tenants have been there for many years.”
Earlier this month, evacuations were ordered for residents of Crestview Towers condominiums in North Miami Beach after construction officials determined he was also unsafe.
Ninety-four people were confirmed dead in the Champlain South Towers collapse on Monday.
Investigators have not determined what caused half of the building to flatten in the middle of the night.
Documents released after the collapse included a 2018 report that highlighted concerns from an engineer that the building had “major structural damage.” The engineer said his findings showed there were “extensive cracks” and crumbling in the parking lot.
