Tuesday saw the opening of the Miami Dolphins’ lavish new training facility next to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Ahead of the ribbon cutting, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross appeared to suggest, with a bit of humor, that he expected an immediate return on his team’s nine-figure investment. After a disappointing end to the 2020 season, are the Dolphins under pressure to perform in 2021?
Stephen Ross has high expectations for Miami Dolphins ahead of 2021 season
At the opening of the new training facility, Ross made a statement that included several references to an upcoming Super Bowl victory.
“We want to do as much as possible with the community, we want to be the best in the NFL and we want to win the Super Bowl. Well, I think we’re two-thirds of the way there, and for the rest, I’m hoping we get to the Super Bowl in a very short time, with the emphasis on the court.
“It takes all of these little details to put together a great organization, which will be used to winning and winning often. “
“If you can’t win with a setup like this, then you never will.”
Even if Ross was joking, it would be wrong to dismiss an underlying level of truth in his remarks. The Dolphins have outdone themselves in the past two seasons. In 2019, they were widely regarded as the worst team in the league but managed to win five games. Then in 2020, few expected them to be in the thick of a playoff race, especially while trying to develop Tua Tagovailoa in the field.
But the standard is now established. Expectations are high. Ross now wants them to deliver more than just a promising season.
Dolphins expect to be in the race for the playoffs in 2021
While the Buffalo Bills looked to be the class of the division in 2020, the Dolphins pushed them closer when they first met. The Dolphins also beat the New England Patriots and New York Jets in three of their four games last season. Therefore, any record below 3-3 within the division would likely be considered a step backwards. Likewise, after failing in the past week, the Dolphins have their sights set on at least one Wild Card spot in 2021.
Tua Tagovailoa’s second season could shape Ross’s feelings about the Dolphins’ front office and coaching staff
While there have been many promising signs from Tua during his rookie season, Justin Herbert’s success has added additional pressure for the Dolphins’ front office. When the player who has been left out by a franchise immediately succeeds, it begs questions. Ross has certainly made it clear that the front office and the coaching staff are now the ones under pressure to deliver.
