DAVIE, Fla – Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is approaching a year since the devastating hip injury in Alabama that threatened to end his career, and questions about his health have followed him since. November 16, 2019, date.
In Sunday’s 34-31 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Tagovailoa showed some of the playing ability with his arms and legs that made people fall in love with him in college. On Wednesday, Tagovailoa remembered his trip and his closeness to his main form.
“Oh, man. I don’t know if I’ll ever be my old self,” Tagovailoa said. “You know, because when something dramatic like that happens, it’s just an ongoing process for me. Keep focusing on what I need to do to continue to strengthen the muscles around my hip. And just continue to rehab. But I mean, it’s been a trip. It was a journey. Let’s go back to this whole process. “
“Literally almost a year from now, we were making the decision whether or not I was going to be able to play again, so I’m just blessed to be here.”
The Dolphins were pleased with this version of Tagovailoa, who threw for 248 yards, ran 35 yards and had two touchdowns, zero turnovers and an 87.6 QBR on Sunday. One game that left his teammates buzzing was a run early in the fourth quarter when he gave Cardinals safety Budda Baker a dead kick in the open field to secure a first down in the third and fourth.
“It was great to watch. I didn’t know he had it in him,” said wide receiver DeVante Parker. “He did some good shots against them. I’m happy for him.”
