DAVIE, Fla – Miami Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams will be placed on the injured list with a foot injury, Brian Flores said Wednesday.
“We have carried out tests. It is a little more important than what we initially thought,” said Flores. “It’s a big loss. Preston made a lot of plays for us in the first half of the season.”
Flores was unwilling to speculate on the length of Williams’ planned absence, but he will miss at least three games with the injury after further tests confirmed a more serious injury.
Williams appeared to suffer from a foot injury as he was tackled by a defensive back in his touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Jakeem Grant is the most likely high-rise candidate in the starting lineup in Williams’ absence. Veteran wide receiver Mack Hollins will also see an increased role and he caught a Tua Tagovailoa touchdown in place of Williams on Sunday. Rookie receivers Lynn Bowden Jr., Malcolm Perry and Kirk Merritt will also see more opportunities to be active on game day and contribute following Williams’ injury.
The Dolphins could also promote Antonio Callaway from the practice squad to the active roster. Callaway was kicked off the suspension list after serving a 14-game suspension for repeatedly breaking NFL drug addiction policy, and he was named as one of four protected players on the team training this week.
Flores also noted that the team could move on to more than two tight sets without Williams, who has made 18 catches for 288 yards and four touchdowns this season.
