Micalla Rettinger was in the car with two passengers around 2:30 am Sunday when she was hit on the neck, the police said. A second passenger, 32-year-old Adam Kimball, was injured and is currently being treated at University of Iowa hospitals. The third passenger was not injured, according to police.
"Nothing indicates that the victims in this case were involved in any way in an activity that would have led them to be targeted in this way," the police department said in a press release.
Rettinger graduated in biology from the University of Northern Iowa in 2016. She was a member of the school's softball team.
"We are dying to learn the senseless death of Micalla Rettinger," said David Harris, director of university sports, in a press release. "This is heartbreaking news for our softball team, UNI Athletics and the entire campus, and our thoughts and prayers are with Micalla's family and friends."
According to the statement, Rettinger was an "outstanding player for the Panthers". In her junior and senior years, she won the honors of the second Missouri Valley All-Conference team, said the school.
"I'm devastated, KK was a very special kid for us," said softball head coach Ryan Jacobs in the release. "I can always see the smile on her face and I remember how she always thought of others authentically.When we had youth camps, she was the one that attracted all the kids on campus."
"It's a huge loss for our team and everyone who has known it," Jacobs said.
The Waterloo authorities are asking the public for help in identifying anyone likely to have been involved in "gunfire or hunting (legal or illegal) in the Cedar River area between the bridge of the United States. Highway 218 and the Conger Ave Bridge ".
"We also ask anyone who may have witnessed a suspicious activity in this area or who has a surveillance / surveillance camera in this area to contact the Investigation Division of the Waterloo Police Service at 319-291-4340 option 7", announced the department.
