Susanne Bier has signed on to direct the anthology series, which also stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama.
Showtime added a second A-list actress to their anthology series The first lady.
Michelle Pfeiffer will play Betty Ford in the series, which will also star Viola Davis as Michelle Obama. Emmy Award winner Susanne Bier (The night manager, the cancellation) also signed on to direct every episode of The first lady – which is produced by Showtime and Lionsgate Television – and will be an executive producer.

The first lady will focus on Michelle Obama, Betty Ford, and Eleanor Roosevelt and the roles they played in shaping impactful and sometimes shifting decisions in the world during their time in the White House.
Betty Ford was first lady from 1974 to 1977 during Gerald Ford’s presidency. She played an active role in social policy and was among the most open and politically active first ladies in history. She also raised awareness about drug addiction and drug addiction by publishing her own alcoholism and co-founded the addiction treatment center that bears her name.
For Pfeiffer, the role will be his first regular series since the very beginning of his career. Recent Oscar and Emmy nominees film credits include Ant-Man and the Wasp, French release and Murder on the Orient Express. It is replaced by CAA, Management 360 and Hirsch Wallerstein.
