Michigan college basketball head coach Juwan Howard was sent off for a timeout in the second half of their 79-66 victory over Maryland.

During a break in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game, Howard was seen gesturing towards the Maryland bench. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon appeared to respond and sparked a skirmish in which Howard charged on the opposing team and had to be restrained by his coaching staff and players.

According to the Detroit Free Press, once Howard learned he could be kicked from the game, he became even angrier. He was then sent off and Turgeon received a technical foul.

In a post-match press conference, Howard said he was trying to discuss an appeal with the referee, but claimed Turgeon told him, “Juwan, I won’t let you talk to me!” You never speak to me again! Howard said Turgeon then accused him.

“I was raised by Grandma and by Chicago,” Howard said. “When a guy charges you, you go into defense mode … When he charges me, I reacted.”

Howard was succeeded by assistant coach Phil Martelli, and Michigan took the win after going in double digits in the first half of the game. They will face the winner of Ohio State against Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday.
