The Michigan State Council of Solicitors voted on Monday to certify the results of the state’s presidential election, a victory for President-elect Joe Biden and a blow to President Donald Trump’s frantic effort to challenge the results.
The two Democrats on the four-member board were joined by one of its two Republicans to vote in favor of certification. The other member of the Republican Council abstained. NBC News projected Biden as the winner in Michigan, where the president-elect leads Trump by more than 150,000 votes.
It comes as Trump’s allies and lawyers called on state legislatures, including Michigan’s, to nominate Trump voters in states won by President-elect Joe Biden. They also made unsubstantiated allegations of irregularities and discrepancies in the vote count – singling out Wayne County, which includes Detroit and its large black population.
Trump invited Republican lawmakers from Michigan states – state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield – to the White House last week. Critics saw it as an attempt to influence the certification process, but lawmakers later said they were “not informed of any information that could change the outcome of the Michigan election.”
In a joint statement released after their approximately two-hour visit to the White House, Michigan lawmakers said their position that voters are those who choose voters in the state has not changed.
