Michigan Founders Brewing To Test CBD Beer

Founders Brewing, based in Michigan, is preparing to test CBD beer.

CBD, or cannabidiol, has become increasingly popular in lotions, tinctures and foods. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp, a version of the cannabis plant with low THC content, the part of cannabis that gives potty to its maximum.

CBD oil has been legalized in Michigan this year with a bill sponsored by state representative, Steve Johnson.

"CBD oil made from hemp does not make you go up," said Johnson. "It does not contain more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But the licensing and regulatory affairs department of Michigan decided last summer to start classifying it in the same way as marijuana, containing 5 to 35% THC. "

Although the CBD is legal, its use in food is a matter of contention for local communities. Some companies in the Greater Detroit area have been asked to stop using CBD in their products until the rules are clearer.

WOOD reports that Founders is launching a CBD pilot program this week.

"It's really exciting," Alec Mull, vice president of brewing operations at Founders, told WOOD. "We're all talking about this now, all the brewers are talking about it."

"I'm really excited to be part of the founders," Mull said. "We really started to try these products personally."

The CBD would probably be added towards the end of the brewing process. The oil has an unpleasant flavor, so the challenge will be for the founders to brew a beer that always tastes good.
