Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was asked about the status of contact sports in high school during her Monday afternoon press conference in Lansing.
While Whitmer said she understood the concerns of the student-athletes, she added that she was uncomfortable allowing the games to start at this point.

“It’s important that we continue to monitor the numbers,” Whitmer said. “I understand the concerns of parents and athletes and their desire to re-engage. But I also point out some of the events that have taken place in recent days. We see this variant developing around Washtenaw County and around the University of Michigan campus. I want to commend the University of Michigan for taking the steps it has taken. We believe these are the right steps to keep people safe and our job is to reduce the spread of this new variant in Michigan.
“We must not let our guard down. We have re-engaged restaurants to some extent which will increase the number of people on the go and I think it’s important that we stay very focused on the numbers before taking any further action.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced on Friday it would ease some restrictions that have been in place in the state since mid-November. These include meals at the indoor restaurant.
However, contact in high school sports will not be allowed at this time, with restrictions for those sports being pushed back to February 21. Teams will be allowed to train, but without contact, and matches and competitions will not be allowed.
