Michigan hires Mike Hart, all-time best rusher in Wolverines history, as running backs coach

Michigan’s all-time best rusher Mike Hart returns to the Wolverines as running backs coach after spending the past four seasons in Indiana, the school said on Wednesday. Hart, 34, was honored three times in the All-Big Ten first team during his four-year college career before playing three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and then beginning his transition to coaching .

“Michigan has always held a special place in my heart,” Hart said. “It’s a place that has always believed in me and a place that I have always believed in. I am excited to join Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan team, and look forward to working with a talented group of running backs.

Hart will be the running backs coach for the Wolverines as he has done for the Hoosiers for the past four seasons. Jay Harbaugh used to coach Michigan’s running backs and special teams, but will now focus primarily on special teams, according to The Michigan Insider of 247Sports Network.

“I am delighted to have added Mike Hart to our offensive coaching staff,” said Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh. “Mike is an excellent coach and a Michigan man who has shown his ability to develop and improve the performance of the running backs he has mentored. We look forward to welcoming Mike, Monique and their children to the Michigan Football family. . “

Hart worked in eastern Michigan from 2011 to 2013, then spent two seasons at Western Michichan and one in Syracuse before joining the Indiana staff when Tom Allen became head coach prior to the 2017 season. The Hoosiers enjoyed one of their best seasons in program history last season, with Hart also assuming the role of associate head coach. Indiana’s 6-2 campaign included their first victory over the Wolverines in 33 years.

Hart’s playing days in Michigan spanned the 2004-07 seasons, which was the last of Lloyd Carr’s term as coach. Hart ran for 5,040 yards and 41 touchdowns as he amassed a record 28 games with 100 or more rushing yards.
