During a year in which Detroit professional sports teams struggled to challenge themselves, Michigan and Michigan State were there to bail them out.

In particular the Wolverines, who have spent a good part of the season in the top 10 of men's football and basketball and who have won a victory at the National Baseball Championship. Add to that good seasons from women's basketball and many other teams, and Michigan wins Best in College Sports for 2018-19, according to CBS Sports.

The Wolverines advanced ahead of Kentucky and Oklahoma for first place – and dethroned the winner of last year, Ohio State, who finished fifth.

CBS Sports uses a system of weighting points to rank all FBS schools in the fields of football, men's basketball and women's basketball – with a focus on the two former – as well as the two most successful sports of every school outside baseball, softball, volleyball and football, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling.

Michigan has accumulated 501.75 points, totaling 281.75 between football and men's basketball. The following four schools – Kentucky, Oklahoma, LSU and Ohio State – actually accumulated more points between the two major sports, but Michigan was stronger overall.

The women's basketball team reached the second round of the NCAA tournament and, according to CBS Sports, the men's gymnastics team finished fourth nationally, with the wrestling team and the gymnastics team both finishing fifths.

Virginia, Iowa, Florida, Notre Dame and Washington complete the Top 10.

Michigan State, with 166 points in men's basketball, finished 11th.
