Authorities say the suspect in the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in southwest Michigan was involved in a car chase with another law enforcement agency earlier today.

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – The suspect in the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in a pursuit in southwest Michigan was involved in a car chase with another law enforcement agency earlier the same day, authorities said on Monday.

Michigan state police on Monday identified the man, who was later shot dead by lawmakers like Kyle Goidosik, 35, of Vicksburg, MLive.com reported.

Speaking at an earlier press conference, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said the suspect pointed a gun at MPs at a gas station in Galesburg on Saturday night and then fled . MPs have pursued the suspect who shot and seriously injured Deputy Ryan Proxmire in the pursuit.

The suspect lost control of his vehicle and entered a field where he was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the other MPs.

Proxmire died in hospital on Sunday.

“There was a concern talking to this person, and things got out of hand,” Fuller said. “The person was committing a crime in front of us that night and that person, his criminal activity led to these events.”

Galesburg is approximately 130 miles (210 kilometers) west of Detroit.

Fuller did not provide any details of the earlier lawsuit involving another agency, saying more details would be revealed in court documents.

However, Portage Police Chief Nick Armold said his officers attempted to arrest the same man earlier on Saturday for a minor traffic violation, MLive.com reported on Monday.

More than 200 people, including law enforcement and other first responders, attended a vigil Sunday evening outside the Sheriff’s Office in Kalamazoo to honor Proxmire.

Fuller said he had worked in the sheriff’s office for nine years, starting as a court security assistant. He also worked in the prison and taught other MPs field training, taser use and control, and defense tactics.

Proxmire was a “fallen hero” and a man “who answered problems so others didn’t have to,” Fuller told reporters.

“He did it with dignity, honor and respect,” Fuller added. “Tragically, his life was cut short last weekend by the nasty actions of a criminal.”
