Michigan State Representative Jewell Jones faced additional felony charges on Wednesday after he was found in possession of a handcuff key after his arrest on Tuesday due to his bail being revoked during a previous arrest.
He was arraigned Wednesday for attempted escape pending a felony trial and for bringing a gun to prison, according to The Detroit News.
“This guy is a real job and an embarrassment to all elected officials, and I think he thinks the laws don’t apply to him,” Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy said, FOX 2 reported. of Detroit. “More than that, I’m angry. If the key to the handcuffs had caused injury to my staff or another detainee, I don’t know what I would have done, as my primary responsibility is the safety of my staff and of my inmates. “

Jones, 26, was arrested for allegedly violating his bond for the third time due to a drunk driving accident earlier this year. His blood alcohol level at the time was more than double the legal limit, police said.
Jones’ alcohol tie on his ankle detected alcohol in his system three times on September 3 – drinking is a violation of his tie – and he allegedly tampered with the tie on September 6.
He was elected to the state legislature in 2016.

Jones pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. His bond was set at $ 100,000 in cash or bail, according to the News.
Officers reportedly found the key stuck to the bottom of Jones’ foot upon admission to Livingston County Jail on Tuesday, FOX 2 reported.

Jones was also ordered to turn over any equipment he would use as a reserve police officer in his district.
Jones’ attorney said he was frustrated with the attempted escape charge because once in a cell the key would not have helped him, the News reported.
Murphy said he didn’t know why Jones had the key with him.
“You could run through limitless possibilities. At the end of the day, people are handcuffed to and from an establishment. If someone has a handcuff key, it’s a bad day for us,” according to the News.
Jones previously violated his bond by allegedly leaving Michigan National Guard training without notifying the court or his attorney and for failing to pay for the upkeep of his bond, which was given to him after his first violation, reported FOX 2.
Upon his arrest in April, Jones told officers their actions “would not be good for you,” adding that he would “call the governor [Gretchen] Whitmer right now, “according to the police report.

Jones also called Whitmer a “buddy” when officers attempted to take his admission photo without a face mask. “You know what? Big Gretch is the mate. When she finds out about that, she might be a little upset with the treatment,” Jones said. “She’s very serious about the pandemic so I’m just wondering if I can wear the mask.”
