Ann Arbor, MI – The Michigan Insider has learned that Michigan’s football program is suspending teams today based on suspected positive tests. The team was alerted to the shutdown earlier this morning. Whether this is a momentary shutdown or something longer will depend on the “confirmatory PCR test results”. All meetings scheduled for the day will begin virtually to continue preparations for Saturday’s game with Maryland if it does not end up being canceled.
MU head coach Jim Harbaugh has been a strong supporter of his team’s ability to play this season, writing an open letter earlier this year explaining the case for his playing schedule after the Big Ten initially canceled the season. He has also presented his case on several occasions since.
“It is not easy. It’s difficult, ”Harbaugh said in an open letter. “The conduct, discipline and structure within our program are proven to have led to these great results. We respect the challenge that the virus presented, but we do not relax about it. We have developed a great prototype of how we can do this work and provide the opportunity for players to play.
“If you are transparent and follow the rules, this is how it can be done. I am forever proud of our players, parents, coaches and employees for being leaders and role models in our sport, in our institution and in society. We will continue to follow all health and safety guidelines, teach, train and coach these young men and their families who have trusted us, while advocating a fall football season. Quoting President Theodore Roosevelt, we are doing this “so that our place is not among cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat”. “
