Michigan to develop nation’s first electrified road for electric vehicles

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a new partnership to develop the nation’s first electrified road for electric vehicle charging.

Whitmer announced the initiative at Motor Bella’s opening ceremony on Tuesday morning.

The Inductive vehicle charge driver is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification that will deploy an electrified road system that allows buses, shuttles and electric vehicles to charge while driving, allowing electric vehicles to operate continuously without s ‘stop to recharge.

“Michigan was home to the first mile of paved road, and now we’re paving the way for the roads of tomorrow with innovative infrastructure that will support the economy and the environment, helping us achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said. “This project reinforces my commitment to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure in Michigan and will create new opportunities for high-tech businesses and jobs as part of the transition to electric vehicles.”

The MDOT will issue a Request for Proposal on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 to design, fund, evaluate, iterate, test and implement the inductive load pilot of vehicles along a one-mile stretch of state-operated road in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties.

“At MDOT, we know that the future of mobility is through connectivity, and this initiative fits perfectly with our other successes connecting vehicles and infrastructure through technology,” said MDOT Director Paul C. Ajegba. “This is a model that we will build on across the state to further promote the governor’s broad and ambitious vision. “
