Michigan to hire Baltimore Ravens assistant as QB coach, report says

It looks like another member of the Baltimore Ravens staff will be joining the Michigan program.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Ravens half-backs coach Matt Weiss will be Michigan quarterbacks coach.

As a Ravens staff member in 2016 and 2017, Weiss helped with quarterbacks and in 18 he helped with duds. For the past two seasons, Weiss was the Baltimore running backs coach. The Ravens led the league in racing in 2019 and 2020.

Weiss was a graduate assistant under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford from 2005 to 2008, so he knows both Jim and John Harbaugh. Additionally, current Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman has been a major catalyst behind the patterns that have propelled the San Francisco 49ers offensive to three straight spots for the NFC Championship with Harbaugh as the head coach. Adding Wrinkles of Roman to Michigan’s playbook could be of benefit.

Michigan previously announced that Jim Harbaugh would be the quarterbacks coach in 2021, but with linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary taking a job in Tennessee, this paved the way for Michigan to add another member to their staff, and it looks like they are choosing to add a QB coach instead.

Weiss will be working with the quarterback trio of Cade McNamara, Dan Villari and JJ McCarthy, and it’s likely Harbaugh won’t be far from the QB room and will still be in contact with the unit.

Weiss, 37, represents another Michigan hiring under 40, an intentional trend. Weiss is the second assistant from Baltimore Michigan has hired this year, with defensive co-coordinator Mike MacDonald being the first.
