Michigan to reopen more ‘in the coming days’ as COVID figures improve, says Whitmer

LANSING, Mich. – More of Michigan is expected to reopen in the “next few days,” with some COVID-19 restrictions easing, the government says. Gretchen whitmer.

“We plan to make more announcements of additional re-engagements in the coming days,” Whitmer said. “Our case numbers and public health metrics are heading in the right direction, and we’re very happy to see that.”

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued a three-week break in mid-November, and that break has been extended and revised several times over the past three months.

More recently, the order was quietly extended by the state until March 29, but Whitmer hinted on Wednesday that there would be more re-engagement soon.

“I feel very optimistic, so let’s just keep it up,” Whitmer said.

Nursing home visits and assembly restrictions are among the issues under consideration.

“We take a very close look at the trend lines,” Whitmer said. “We really saw Michigan move into a much stronger position.

“We hope to be able to announce additional aspects of the re-enlistment to the (nursing home) frontline – hopefully as early as next week.

She said if the state stepped in to allow more gatherings, it would be gradual. This is to avoid a major spike in cases.

“As we figure out the next steps, it’s part of the conversation we’re having,” Whitmer said. “One of the things, however, that I caution is that we know one of the biggest places of spread this fall was in homes. These were gatherings going on, where people let their guard down.

“Every step we have taken has been progressive. Like we said, it’s a dial, not a light switch.

However, it doesn’t look like restaurants will see their restrictions relaxed.

“I hope we finally get to this point,” Whitmer said. “But at this point, we’ve only been there a few weeks. We must continue to monitor the data. We need to make sure we have antigen testing. “
