It’s up to America to send Michigan opera singer Ryan Gallagher to the live shows of “The Voice.” The 32-year-old, from the small town of Ada near Grand Rapids, just performed in the four-way playoff round on the hit NBC reality TV singing contest with only one of the performers advancing.
Gallagher faced three other singers, Julia Cooper, Taryn Papa and Larriah Jackson, instead of just one because her coach, Kelly Clarkson, picked her opponent in the Battle Round, but she ended up using her only save from the season on him. The other three singers of the Four-Way Knockout were also rescued.
Gallagher, who is part of Team Kelly, killed her performance of Andrea Bocelli’s “Time To Say Goodbye”. If you close your eyes you might think you are listening to Josh Groban.
“Ryan, you stand out from everyone else because nobody sings like you,” Clarkson said after his performance. “Even though I don’t even know what you’re saying, it doesn’t even matter, it’s so emotional. It’s time for a cool new thing.
Dad sang “Cry” by Faith Hill, Cooper sang “Wish You Were Gay” by Billie Eilish and Jackson sang “One and Only” by Adele. All three performed well and received praise from their coaches.

We caught up with Gallagher, 32, when he surprised coaches with his Groban-like voice performing “The Prayer” by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion at the “The Voice” blind auditions last month.
“First of all, no one in this competition can touch you. You are totally unique, ”Clarkson said, making his pitch for Gallagher to choose her over Blake Shelton. “I’m really excited. It looks effortless and it feels like a conversation of the gods,” added Clarkson after choosing his team over Shelton’s.
We then saw him last week when he faced off against Marisa Corvo in the Battle Round. The two gave a powerful performance of Celine Dion’s “Surrender”. Clarkson chose Corvo, but as we mentioned, he saved Gallagher.
Gallagher was born and raised in Grand Rapids. He dated the Apostle Saint Thomas before his family moved to Ada when he was in 5th grade. He graduated from Forest Hills Central and while in high school also worked in his father’s construction company, Gallagher Design Inc.
After graduating, he spent two years at GRCC before moving to Nashville to pursue a career as a singer. He has lived in Los Angeles for 11 years. Gallagher has four brothers and one sister and his mother has been battling multiple sclerosis for almost 29 years. He revealed ahead of his Battle Round performance that his mother was fighting Covid. Gallagher said she recently left the ICU.
“My mom is just a very positive person. She’s so strong, ”Gallagher told MLive. “Being kids was so difficult because we all had to weigh. I think my mother being sick when we were all so young, we were all so close. It gave us so much discipline, compassion and empathy at a young age.
While Gallagher has performed for many years all over the world at events like weddings, beauty pageants and store openings, he says “The Voice” could give him the opportunity to advance his career at a new level.
“The Voice” was the opportunity to be on the biggest stage. People tend to like my voice even though it might not be something they usually listen to. This is my chance to capture a large audience. I was able to travel and pay the bills, but I would really like to win the show so I can get a recording deal. I would like to release a record that I’m proud of and tour to promote it. Otherwise, I would like to continue playing. It’s my life.”
