A Mickey Mantle baseball card shattered a 5-month-old record for the best-selling sports card of all time, at $ 5.2 million, PWCC Marketplace announced Thursday.

“The Topps Mantle of 1952 is the holy grail of sports cards,” Gough said. “As a kid ripping bundles in the ’90s, I always dreamed of owning one. … I felt this Mantle was very undervalued.”

Since August, Gough has amassed a 1916 Sporting News Babe Ruth rookie, a 1917 Collins-McCarthy Joe Jackson, and several PSA 10 Michael Jordan rookie cards, among others.
The purchase marks another milestone in the midst of a recent surge in sales of high-priced sports memorabilia. Eight cards have sold for $ 900,000 or more, including six in the past 12 months.
