Microsoft has started to warn Windows 7 users of the end of support that was due to take place in January 2020.
The German site DrWindows claims that such notifications are currently being displayed on devices in the United States and Europe, with users in Germany having recently received the same warning.
Users are advised that support for Windows 7 is coming to an end and Microsoft recommends that they upgrade to a new version of the operating system as soon as possible in order to continue to receive updates.
A "Learn More" link is also included in the notification and returns users to a Microsoft support page providing additional information about the end of Windows 7 support.
Windows 7 dark in January
Microsoft advocates Windows 10 as a recommended destination for Windows 7 users, but also claims that the purchase of a new computer is the best way to get the most out of the new operating system.
"You can continue to use your Windows 7 PC without following software and security updates, but the risk of viruses and malware increases. For the future, the best way to stay secure is Windows 10. And the best way to discover Windows 10 is to use a new PC. Although it is possible to install Windows 10 on your old device, this is not recommended, "Microsoft says.
The notification is optimized by the KB4493132 update announced by Microsoft earlier this year. If you delete this update, the warning should no longer appear on the device.
However, the notification itself is also provided with an option to prevent its subsequent reoccurrence, so that you can technically prevent this behavior without necessarily removing the update.
The end of Windows 7 support is scheduled for January 14, 2020. It currently runs on more than 35 percent of the world's computers.
