Microsoft has unveiled a major update for its Edge browser, introducing new features including sleep tabs, new themes, and performance improvements. The latest features arrive a year after the release of the Chromium version of Microsoft Edge.
Probably the most interesting features from a consumer perspective are the introduction of new themes in Edge. Microsoft said it has created 24 new themes, giving users plenty of options to customize their browser experience. Some of the themes come straight from Xbox, including Halo, Gears, Forza, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, and more.
Themes apply a new background on the new tabbed page, while tabs, address bar, and other parts of the browser take on the appearance of the theme as well. Support is also available for vertical tabs in the Dev channel, which the company recently tested.
Speaking of design, Microsoft is incorporating more elements of its Fluent design system into Edge, starting with browser icons, which now take on a rounder and smoother appearance. Microsoft said it plans to further integrate its Fluent design system into more of its products, but did not share details.
The next thing people will notice in Edge are the sleeping tabs. Microsoft has stated that this feature will improve browser performance by improving memory usage and CPU resources. “When multiple tabs are open, system resources for inactive tabs will be freed up to power new or existing tabs as well as other applications, preventing slowdowns and slowness.”
Microsoft is also rolling out new password manager features to Edge. One of the features is a password generator. The new one will automatically suggest a secure password when you sign up for a new online account or change an existing password. The Password Generator comes before other security features, including a password monitor, which will tell you if any of your passwords are on a list of leaked credentials on the dark web.
In terms of improving privacy, Microsoft said Edge will include additional transparency to help users manage specific site permissions. Users will be able to control which sites you share location, camera, and microphone access. You can also view, edit, and reset site permissions if you change your mind.
These features are part of a much larger update to Edge, which also rolls out tab history and sync to all users. This feature was previously available in select countries earlier this month.
