Microsoft announced a ton of new features coming to its Edge browser later this month. One of the new features is vertical tabs, which the Redmond company says will make tab management a lot easier.
Originally announced last March, vertical tabs allow users to move their cluttered tabs to a side pane with just one click. The feature is ideal for those who constantly have dozens of tabs open at once, as moving them to the side allows you to see the tab titles and controls clearly.
Microsoft said the browser’s new vertical tabs feature pairs well with sleep tabs, which Microsoft introduced earlier this year. According to Microsoft, this latest feature would increase battery life by using 26% less CPU on average compared to a tab without sleep.
Microsoft Edge also benefits from a new Quick Start feature, which will reduce the time it takes to open the browser. Deploying later this month, Microsoft says the feature can improve boot times by 41%. The feature will automatically activate when available, “and you can access your browser’s settings menu to further customize Microsoft Edge.”
Bing is also getting a bit of love in the latest update for Microsoft Edge. Microsoft is improving Bing by dynamically adapting the search results page. If you search for recipes, for example, you’ll see improved visuals and other information like calories per serving. This information will make it easier for users to find what they are looking for. The carousel experience has also been improved, with intuitive hover experiences.
Meanwhile, Microsoft said Bing will aggregate the information for more detailed topics and display it in a visually appealing way. If you’re looking for a topic like “Kenya” or “giraffes,” Bing will bundle key text and visual results into one infographic-inspired experience.
Finally, Microsoft Edge will make it easier to access and manage your history without losing the context of the page you are on. When you click on history, it will open as a drop-down list from the toolbar instead of opening the full page in settings. The browser is also testing a shared links functionality (via Most recent windows), which will allow users to quickly find the links they have copied or shared.
All of these new features are coming to Microsoft Edge over the next month or so.
