Microsoft has recently made a decision that raises questions regarding the future of its own Microsoft Store.
The Office productivity suite can no longer be installed from the Microsoft Store. Even though built-in applications, such as Word and Excel, are still listed in the store, the download is provided through the Instant Install program.
In other words, when you load the Microsoft Office product page into the Microsoft Store, all the information is still there, but when you click the install button, the users are redirected to the Web where they have to download and run the classic installer.
Goodbye, Microsoft Store?
The reason is not known at the moment, but at first glance, it's something that Microsoft has done on purpose. And what's worse is that it does not seem to be a change that the company plans to reverse in the future.
"People will continue to be able to find Office in the store. If the Office image is not already preinstalled, they will be directed to https://account.microsoft.com/ to install it, says the firm.
Users running Windows 10 in S mode, which is limited to Microsoft Store applications, can also install the productivity usage with the installer in one click, the process taking place exactly like Windows.
Microsoft's decision to pull its own productivity suite from the Microsoft Store suggests that this is the first important step the company is taking to completely eliminate the store. It's no secret that the Microsoft Store is not necessarily a successful effort and that the UWP application surge in Windows 10 has more or less failed so far.
As Microsoft tries to focus on products that make sense and bring bacon back home, removing the Microsoft Store is a good thing in the long run. If this is the plan, expect new changes in this area in the coming months.
