Microsoft has hired Charlie Bell, chief cloud officer for Amazon, as the company’s vice president, CNBC confirmed.
This decision represents a victory for Microsoft, whose Azure cloud business is trying to take shares of Amazon Web Services, the market leader.
Bell was considered a candidate for the head of AWS once Amazon chose Andy Jassy, the CEO of AWS, to lead all of Amazon. Bell was on the S team of Amazon’s top executives, and his responsibilities as senior vice president included pricing, software development service operations and financial results, CNBC reported earlier this month. as Bell left Amazon.
It is not known what Bell will do initially at Microsoft. It was listed under the organization of Kathleen Hogan, executive vice president and chief human resources officer of Microsoft, on a Microsoft corporate directory, according to a copy CNBC viewed.
This location within Microsoft is unusual given Bell’s 15 years of leadership at AWS, and may be temporary.
Amazon has previously filed lawsuits against employees who went to competing companies. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its plans for Bell.
Bell did not respond to a request for comment. A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment on the decision.
